Manto Sipi Cree Nation is a Cree (Ininew) community at the mouth of the God's River on the north shore of God's Lake in northern Manitoba.
ᒪᓂᑐ ᓰᐱᐩ (manito sîpiy) — Manto Sipi Cree Nation (ᒪᓂᑐ ᓰᐱᐩ, manito sîpiy) is a Cree (Ininew) Nation in northern Manitoba. It was formerly known as the God's River Indian Band. Its main reserve, God's River 86A, sits at the mouth of the God's River on the north shore of God's Lake. The community can only be reached by winter road or by air through Gods Lake Airport.
The Nation was originally part of God's Lake First Nation. People moved from God's Lake Narrows in the mid-1940s, and God's River First Nation was formed by Ministerial Order on May 7, 1976. The Nation is a signatory to the 1909 Adhesion to Treaty 5, which was signed on August 6, 1909, by Chief Peter Watt of God's Lake First Nation and councillors Big Simon and Peter Chubb.
The community's official languages are Cree (Ininîmowin) and English. The Nation took control of its education system in April 1994, when the Amos Memorial Education Authority became a non-profit corporation. The school employs a Native Language Teacher and land-based educators. The Nation also owns and operates the Gods River Fishing Lodge.
Manto Sipi Cree Nation is a member of the Keewatin Tribal Council and Manitoba Keewatinowi Okimakanak (MKO). Find out more on the Nation's official website.
